Talking To Your Children About Alzheimer’s

GranddaughterGrandma_gardeningYour kids may sense it–if they don’t know already–because they are a lot more intuitive than we sometimes give them credit for. If a loved one has Alzheimer’s disease, you need to be honest with your children and help them to understand the best ways to deal with the situation.

There is no telling how your child will react to the news that Grandma, Grandpa, or even Mom or Dad has Alzheimer’s. While some may seem unaffected, others can act out, vie for your undivided attention, become withdrawn, or come to be very afraid about how to act in front of the person who has the disease.

Some might even be concerned that the disease is contagious, and they, or perhaps another family member who they count on for guidance and love, could become sick as well.

That is why it’s wise to talk to your kids about Alzheimer’s disease and encourage them to ask questions. You can still be delicate, but above all, you should be truthful.

Also, if there is a question you can’t answer, be sure and consult with someone who can, so you can better convey the message to your child.
