Similar Symptoms for Depression and Alzheimer’s Disease

Early-stage Alzheimer’s disease and depression share similar symptoms, according to a recent article published by the Mayo Clinic. Because the symptoms are so alike, doctors sometimes have had a hard time distinguishing between the two brain disorders. Depression is also one of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

The article states that people who suffer from Alzheimer’s related depression may find it easier to cope with memory impairment after being treated for the depression. Although drugs to treat Alzheimer’s generally slow the progression of cognitive decline, medications to treat depression go a long way toward improving a person’s quality of life.

Here are some symptoms common to both Alzheimer’s and depression:

• Loss of interest in once-enjoyable activities and hobbies
• Social withdrawal
• Memory problems
• Sleeping too much or too little
• Impaired concentration
