Resident Veteran: JC

JC_Veteran_fullJC was a radio man for the United States Marines. He was stationed in the Pacific during World War II at a base called Peleliu. Due to a leg injury he was not allowed in combat, but his job was extremely important to the safety of his fellow soldiers. As a radio operator, JC controlled radio communications with many of the bombers that flew missions over enemy territory. Many United States pilots relied on him to ensure safe passage back to the base. You can imagine how harrowing those conversations between pilot and operator must have been – their lives very often depended on his accuracy and expertise.

One night while JC was on duty, one of our bombers was headed back to base over enemy territory when it suddenly took on heavy fire. The guidance system was shot out and the pilot was now flying blindly without any instruments to guide him. The pilot radioed to JC and informed him of his critical situation. Knowing that the lives of the crew on this bomber were now in his capable hands, JC sprang into action. With the radio blaring, maps unfolded before him, and his military know-how, he was able to guide the bomber safely to base. After the plane landed and everyone breathed a sigh of relief, the crew ran to the radio tower and showered JC with handshakes and hugs, grateful for his expert guidance and grace under pressure. JC is considered a hero not only to the crew he saved that day, but also to countless others for keeping the bomber and its crew out of enemy hands.

Thank you for your service, JC. You are an inspiration and a true veteran!
