Jan stands at the front door of Autumn Leaves of Gurnee. Around her, she can smell the sweet aroma of fresh flowers as she lingers for a moment – welcoming the warmth of the approaching summer. It’s Thursday…a special day for Jan and her mother Carol, who is a resident at the Gurnee community. Jan takes a deep breath, smiles, and then enters the community – her mother is sitting at a chair by the window taking in the pleasant weather. “Are you ready for our big day?” asks Jan as a gentle smile takes form on her mother’s face.
Jan and Carol head to the community’s in-house salon. She holds her mother’s hand as the stylist rinses her hair, elevates her head, and places a towel behind her neck. As the stylist spins her around in the chair, Carol appears calm and happy. Next, it is time for a trim. Afterwards, some color. Maybe a manicure?
On the way to her room, Carol looks elated. Jan is taking her to lunch…then shopping…and she wants to pick out something nice to wear. Carol’s bedroom is arranged beautifully; her daughter, Jan, is an interior designer, and is always willing to lend a professional hand on her weekly visits.
After the two ladies finish getting ready, they head down the hallway. Carol is beaming. They smile at the other residents as Carol tries to contain her excitement. Today is Thursday. It is the day Carol’s daughter comes to visit – Carol’s favorite day of the week.
