Five Tips To Keep Your Brain Sharp

November 4, 2014

In recent weeks, there have been some significant steps taken in the fight against Alzheimer’s.  New research by UCLA shows that a treatment plan centered on simple  lifestyle changes can reverse symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.  Other research just presented by a Keele University professor claims that aluminum present in everyday life may build up in the brain and cause Alzheimer’s disease.  What can people do to help stave off the potential of getting Alzheimer’s, even in light of this promising new research?

Researchers have been able to link healthier lifestyle choices to a reduced risk of getting the disease.  Neurologist David Perlmutter (and author of the books Great Brain and the Great Brain Cookbook) claims that, much like heart disease, there are simple lifestyle changes one can do to reduce their risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease.

“Dementia, for the most part, is strongly related to lifestyle choices such as diet, exercise, and even preventing head trauma,” said Perlmutter. “This is powerful information as it puts dementia into the same category as heart disease, for example, in which everyone seems to be very aware of the fact that there are things we can do to prevent it”

Here are five things you can do to help keep your brain sharp:

  1. Watch your blood sugar.  Even having mildly elevated blood sugars can lead to a significantly higher risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease.
  2. Keep up with your cardio.  Multiple studies suggest that keeping up with cardio activities can make your brain more resilient to developing dementia.
  3. Protect your noggin.  Even mild head trauma early in life can set the stage for memory impairing issues later on.
  4. Sip mineral water.  Silicon is a common mineral in tap and bottled water.  Silicon helps to flush aluminum, which has now been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, out of the body.
  5. Lower your cholesterol.  People with lower cholesterol can reduce their risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease by 60 or 70 percent.
