7 Habits To Improve Memory

May 27, 2014

Everyone knows Alzheimer’s disease and dementia cases are significantly on the rise across the world.  According to the Alzheimer’s Association, in the U.S. there are currently 5 million Americans living with the disease.  Every 67 seconds someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with the disease.  Doctors and researchers alike are constantly looking for new ways in which to treat the disease, or to offer guidance on how to cope with the diagnosis.

Just like keeping up with your own personal health by exercising or eating right, there are habits you can form early in life that will help with memory.  Here are 7 habits you can start doing now to help your memory long-term.

  1. Hit The Gym.  Exercising has so many health benefits with memory being yet another one.  Research suggests exercise helps with your memory.  A study conducted last year by the University of Texas-Dallas found older exercisers saw improvement in memory and cognition in as little as six weeks after starting an exercise regiment.
  2. Careful With The Alcoholic Beverages.  Recent studies suggest middle-aged men who drink more than two and a half drinks per day will experience cognition decline and memory issues up to six years earlier than those that don’t.
  3. Take More Naps.  Harvard University recently released a study that showed students who took naps performed better on their exams over their non-napping counterparts.
  4. Break Your Routine.  Try new foods, go home a different way or just try something different.  Neuroscientists say new experiences help your brain retain and recall information quicker.
  5. Eat Vegetables More Often.  A Harvard University study that spanned 25 years found women who ate plenty of vegetables, had less issues with age-related memory problems.
  6. Consider Meditation.  Recent studies show after meditating just 45 minutes, four times a week, graduate students at the University of California, Santa Barbara improved their memory and focus in just two weeks.  De-stress and find time for yourself.
  7. Caffeine Does Have Its Benefits.  Believe it or not, research shows caffeine can help you recall and retain information much quicker.
